The mountainous landscape of the Lungau valley is a natural snow bowl supporting snow-sure skiing and snowboarding opportunities for up to 5 months of the year.
The region is divided into four different ski areas, altogether offering more than 300km of downhill slopes serviced by more than 60 lifts. Each area is well-equipped equipped with snow making machines to back-up the regular heavy snow fall and is 100% snow guaranteed!
The main skiing season begins in Obertauern during November and for the remaining three areas start running their lifts at the beginning of December. As a rule, the areas stay open until after Easter each year with Obertauern running lifts until the beginning of May.
The area is unusual in it’s lack of commercialism and known for being a family friendly destination. The people are welcoming, accidents are few and the lifts are quiet. The pistes are predominantly wide and offer a variety of difficulty to suit all levels of skier and snowboarder. The runs are well-signed and each region offers mapped out off piste areas for lovers of freeriding and deep snow.
A choice of friendly ski and snowboard schools offer children specific tuition, group lessons and one-to-one instruction. Smaller family members can enjoy the day-care services offered locally by the Smarty Mini Club.
Night skiing on groomed, floodlit pistes can be enjoyed a few times each week. A free ski bus services the whole region and for private vehicles, each ski area is equipped with large car parking facilities. Equipment hire is readily available in every convenient location with shops in the town centre and at each and every lift station.
Lift passes are very reasonably priced with a varied choice of purchase options including points cards, part-day, regional and season passes. Special offers include Ski Plus weeks where each pass is given with a bonus book providing discounted services throughout the region. Over 70s have a dedicated week where all skiers over the age of 70 get to ski for free.
Cross Country Skiing is a much loved pastime in the Lungau and with trails stretching about 150km in length there is a great variety of options available. A dedicated 80km or trails are available for cross country skating and the high altitude trails in Schönfeld Thomatal, on the Karneralm, in Prebersee and Mariapfarr-Lignitz guarantee excellent snow conditions well into spring.
With its seven side valleys, the region is an Eldorado for ski tourers with numerous routes amongst the high peaks, promising exhilarating freeriding in untracked fields of deep-snow.
