The Lungau in winter presents all kinds of opportunities for holidaymakers.

A veritable winter wonderland, the mountainous landscape is a natural host for all types of winter sports and activities with extensive ski and snowboarding options, cross-country trails, a wealth of ski touring possibilities, winter walking paths and snow-shoe routes, tobogganing, ice skating, horse riding and carriage rides.

The region caters for everyone!

There are four ski areas within easy reach offering over 300km of snowy piste and much opportunity for off-piste and freestyle runs. A choice of friendly ski schools offer children specific tuition, group lessons and one-to-one instruction. Smaller family members can enjoy the day-care services offered locally by the Smarty Mini Club.

Night skiing on groomed, floodlit pistes can be enjoyed a few times each week. A free ski bus services the whole region and for private vehicles, each ski area is equipped with large car parking facilities.

Lift passes are very reasonably priced with a varied choice of purchase options including points cards, part-day, regional and season passes. Special offers include Ski Plus weeks and a special week where skiers aged 70 years and over get to ski for free.

Cross Country Skiing is a much loved pastime in the Lungau and with trails stretching about 150km in length there is a great variety of options available. A dedicated 80km of trails are available for cross country skating and the high altitude trails in Schönfeld Thomatal, on the Karneralm, in Prebersee and Mariapfarr-Lignitz guarantee excellent snow conditions well into spring.

With its seven side valleys, the region is an Eldorado for ski tourers with numerous routes amongst the high peaks, promising exhilarating freeriding in untracked fields of deep-snow.

An extensive and clearly marked winter hiking network invites walkers to enjoy the winter paradise at their leisure. Snow shoe walks and adventures are also very popular with guided and self-guided tours well away from the better known areas.

Further winter activities include ice skating, either at the local outdoor rink or on frozen lakes higher up in the valley.  Tobogganing is hugely popular too with a number of dedicated toboggan runs with equipment to hire on site.

You could test out your winter driving skills at one of the dedicated winter driving tracks, go horse riding or experience the magical winter landscape from the comfort of a horse-drawn sleigh.

After an energetic day an early evening at the BadeInsel can be thoroughly recommended with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, slides for the kids, a selection of saunas, steam rooms and whirlpool baths designed to relax and rejuvenate.

The Samsunn Wellness Centre in Mariapfarr offers yet further opportunity to relieve the stresses of the body with numerous health and beauty treatments, massage, physiotherapy, acupuncture and a huge selection of saunas.

Wherever you go, it is guaranteed that any number of alpine huts, restaurants and cafes will be waiting to open their doors and offer you a warming break from the fresh winter air.

You can be assured of welcoming, friendly service and a hearty selection of local delights.

All guests staying in the Lungau between December and the first week after Easter are entitled to receive a personal holiday card, valid for the duration of stay.  The LungauCard Winter offers free or discounted access to services, sights and attractions accross the region.
