Reiseguide im Salzburger LungauTravel Guide for the Lungau

The Travel Guide is an interactive listing of all the events and activities that will be available to you throughout the Lungau at the time of your vacation.  Simply enter your dates and use the information to help plan your holiday itinerary.

The mountainous landscape of the Lungau valley provides the perfect place for adventure outdoors, with year-round sporting activities to suit every active person and many more attractions to satisfy those wanting to enjoy a more leisurely paced holiday.

Between April and October every year, enthusiasts can enjoy a fabulous network of mountain bike routes, cycle paths and E-Bike tours with family friendly gradients to much more challenging trails.  The Electrodrive (environmentally friendly electric power bicycles) in the Lungau has made many of the more difficult paths more accessible - with an E-Bike going uphill is a breeze!

The Lungau is visited year after year by those who love to walk, hike and climb with hundreds of kilometers of well signed walks, guided tours and themed outings, not forgetting "Winterwanderwegs" through the snow and ice capped forests in the colder months.  Naturally, routes vary in difficulty from leisurely strolls to as hard as it gets.  Maps are readily available to help you plan ahead for a perfect outing.

Year round Nordic walking is also a major attraction with 11 signed routes through the Nature Fitness Parks of the valley, and the largest certified network of Nordic walking paths only a short distance away in Mariapfarr.

For a more relaxing holiday, you can look forward to reclining in hot summer sunshine around St Michael's heated outdoor pool, playing mini golf or table tennis and taking in the peaceful and idyllic surroundings that make up our wonderful valley.  For winter swimming, look no further than BadeInsel in Tamsweg with its numerous saunas, water slides, swimming pools and outdoor pools (yes in winter).

Energetic kids (young and old!) can enjoy organised pony treks, quad biking, snow tubing and water tubing, trampolines, adventure parks and tree top obstacle courses, wild life parks, tennis, bowling, climbing, archery, the list goes on.....

St Michael town and the Lungau valley are rich in history and culture and offer many sights and attractions to those who are interested.  Locally you can enjoy historic attractions such as Castle Moosham and St Leonard Pilgrimage Church.  Haus Bellevue is ideally located for day trips (being only a short distance from the Autobahn) to places such as the Ice Caves in Werfen or to the amazing city of Salzburg.

The Lungau Golf Club is embedded in the heart of the valley, only a few kilometers away.  The 18 hole course with driving range is set alongside the clear waters of the river Mur and offers something for everyone from the die-hard golf enthusiast to family lessons and children-specific golf days.  The site also boasts a fantastic restaurant offering everything from ice creams and coffee to traditional dishes and Champagne and is an ideal rest stop for those walking or riding along the Murradweg.  If you love to ski and play golf why not combine your two favourite past times in one holiday and try out a combined ski and golf pass? For around 40 Euros between March and April you can purchase a pass that will allow you to ski until 1pm and spend the rest of the day on the green.

Winter in the Lungau brings the snow and the valley is a veritable winter wonderland.  Once again the landscape lends itself well to sporting activity with 4 different ski areas totaling around 300km of piste, 200km cross country ski and skating Routes, massive possibilities for ski touring, ice skating, snow shoe tours and so much more.

Of course, you do not need to be aggressively active to enjoy the winter landscape with more relaxing options such as horse drawn sleigh rides, curling, sight seeing, or simply walking leisurely whilst breathing in the fresh mountain air and enjoying the odd respite in one of the many alpine huts or local cafes (to drink we recommend a warming Gluhwein, to eat look no further than home-made Apfelstrüdel with vanilla sauce....).

The seasons in the Lungau valley are all very different and many traditions and celebrations have developed around the changing year times.  Spring is fantastic as the hills and fields reclaim their former greenery, the meadows bloom with flowers but the mountain peaks stay white and the air is still fresh.  More often than not the days are pleasantly warm and sunny and the towns are quiet and peaceful.  This time of year is marked by the raising of the Maibaum, up which people climb in a bid to get the highest mark whilst onlookers celebrate and cheer with mugs of beer.   Autumn in Austria is one of the nicest seasons, when the local harvests bring fabulous fresh delicacies to every restaurant and dinner table.  The weather is usually very agreeable with fresh sunny days perfect for long strolls in the countryside.  The unusual Samsonman march through the local towns takes place in Autumn (find out more about this on our sight seeing page).  Both Autumn and Spring are low seasons in terms of holidays, which means everything is less expensive and the towns, shops and attractions are free from crowds.  Then of course there is Christmas for which celebrations begin during the first weekend of advent when many houses and towns decorate their outdoors with lights turning the valley into a magical wonderland.  www.katschberger-adventweg.atNumerous activities are set to inspire festive cheer and a true Christmas feeling including weekly Advent Markets, a candle lit advent round-trail high up in the mountains and the fearsome but entertaining Krampus run trhough the streets of most towns and villages.  New Year is widely celebrated with fireworks going off until the early hours.  Throughout Christmas and New Year, there is much importance placed upon religious worship with midnight mass on Heiligeabend (Christmas Eve) being a focal point of the season.

Whatever the season or reason for your holiday, we are confident that the Lungau valley (and our fabulous accommodation) can satisfy your desires.  We are very happy to offer advice and recommendations to help you plan your perfect vacation - don't hesitate to ask!
