Hiking is one of the greatest attractions to those visiting the Lungau region. The mountainous valley provides the perfect landscape to enjoy a wide variety of trails and mapped routes in breathtaking scenery every month of the year. Nestled between the high mountain peaks and meadows, over 60 clear lakes, mountain brooks and beautiful waterfalls wait to be discovered. For an overview of the main lake walks, elevations and levels of difficulty click HERE.
Guided hikes are arranged regularly throughout the warmer months by local tourist offices. The St Michael tourist personnel arrange regular outings every Friday in July and August, and on demand at any other time.
Self- guided walks , themed hikes and cultural trails are very popular with everything from easy family friendly routes to more difficult treks lasting several days!
Many of the trails and walking routes are based within one of the valleys nature- and National parks. Enjoy learning about the landscapes flora and fauna with information
boards en-route describing the Lungau and its countryside. Play in the waterfalls of Wasserwegleisnitz and read about the history of the fierce river and how it has been tamed. Have fun with an adventure hike in Lessach enjoying children's activity stations along the way. Marvel at the history of the Arnoweg Trail connecting a host of
Salzburgerland's gorges, peaks and historical attractions including our very own Mauterndorf Castle.
Naturally, whether hiking casually along the alpine routes or venturing up some of the more challenging summit trails, a well deserved rest is always on the agenda. In this the Lungau does not disappoint, with over 60 traditional and rustic huts, hill farms and mountain

Traveling around the valley couldn't be easier with the Lungau Tälerbus and taxi services. In 2015 the Tälerbus costs €10,00 for the day or €24,10 for the week and the ticket is valid for travel on the entire valley bus network and the trains of the murtalbahn. Or if you
really want to slow down your pace, from Katschberg you can hire a horse drawn taxi to take you to the Gontal valley where you can hike up Tschanneck and over the Gontalscharte before your relaxing return journey - prices from €9 for Children and €18 for Adults. The easiest way to travel UP is by way of Mountain Lift. The ski regions of Speiereck/Grosseck, Katschberg/Aineck and Obertauern run their lifts on a summer timetable too, including transport for bicycles available with the cable cars in both St Michael and Mauterndorf.

The "Lungau Summer in the Hills" brochure describes many of the walks in detail including essential tips and recommendations and can be easily downloaded or lbtained free of charge from
any of the local tourist offices. For more extensive information, we recommend the "Lungauer Wanderbücherl" which details 31 different hikes throughout the region. This too can be picked up from the tourist office for a small fee.
