Fishing is the perfect pastime to experience the peace and tranquility of the Lungau.  The clear mountain streams and lakes are home to a bountiful fish habitat with something to meet every Angling need including "beginners" lakes and children friendly fishing options.

Fishing licence prices vary and are usually available on location or from the tourist office.  If you do not have your own equipment it is best to enquire about availability before purchasing your licence!

There are two gishing lakes within a short distance of the accommodation with many more spread across the valley.

Outdoor Adventure...


Biosphären Adventures in St Michael offer an unforgettable archery experience in the alpine forests.  Traditional archery (not to be confused with cross-bows) can be easily enjoyed by almost everyone with the tuition and equipment provided by the sports centres

Rafting, Kayaking and Canoeing

With clear mountain waters coming from heights of over 2000m and the second largest river in Austria, the is Lungau an ideal place to enjoy rafting, kayaking and canoeing.

Flying Fox

The Flying Fox is an adrenaline charged zip-wire ride across the Nessiteich.  Harnessed securely, this awesome experience is completely safe and suitable for everyone over 5 years of age.

Katschberg Adventure Park

The Katschberg Adventure Park  originally opened in June 2009 with further developments in 2010.  Now with 80 stations it is the largest tree top obstacle course in Carinthea.  Navigate the tree branches of Katschberg's wild wood traveling carefully from platform to platform using different co-ordination skills (and a good helping of courage).  Naturally the adventure is safe with secure harness and safety ropes keeping you firmly secured.

Open from May to October prices range from €25 for Adults and €20 for Children.  Certain age restrictions apply and there are group discounts available.  For more information contact:

Outdoorparc Lungau

The Outdoorparc in Mariapfarr (new in 2012) offers a wide range of interesting sporting activities including a climbing wall, tree top adventure park, flying fox, a parcour course, bouldering and streetsoccer.  If this all sounds too adventurouse, the Nassiteich (lake) provides the perfect place to relax.  However watch out for the Zorb Balls...    

Open daily from July to September from 1pm till 5pm (closed in bad weather).  Prices from €15 per person with options for family and season cards.


Tandem Paragliding

Experience the idyllic Valley from above with St Michael's Paragliding experience.  Tandem Paragliding flights take off from Aineck and Speiereck mountains and circle the towns of St Margarethen and St Michael respectively.  For bookings and information:

Paintballing in the Lungau

Smarty Sports

Smarty Sports offer a huge variety of activities and summer programs for the whole family.  Smarty Land is a large summer fun park located at the bottom of the cable car station in Mauterndorf, where kids big and small can enjoy pony rides, water tubing and trampolining.  There you can also find a children's climbing wall, kids quad bikes, go carts, a bouncy castle, huge slides, a petting Zoo, a play park with wwings and much more.  

The location has an excellent alpine restaurant and easy access to the cable car, mountain walks and bike routes.

Child Care in Winter

In winter, most child care providers are centred around fun in the snow with various age-appropriate ski activities.  Check out the following Groups:

Otto's Ski School - St Michael and on Katschberg covering both the Katschi and Grosseck/Speiereck Ski Regions

FirnSepp Ski School - based in St Margarethen and operating in the Aineck-Katschberg Ski Region.

Both Smarty Sports and FirnSepp offer Clubs for those children big enough to play in the snow but not yet big enough to ski on the slopes.

For younger children, check out Smarty's Mini-Club.  Not to be confused with a ski club, the Mini club based in Mauterndorf has a 200m² indoor play area including children's cinema.  Qualified kindergarten nannies are trained to guide, play, draw with and entertain your children.  This club is available for children of 18 months and older.  Booking required...

Quad Bikes

Quadbiking in the Lungau

Quad Bike hire is available from a couple of sources in the Lungau.

For groups bookings, races and different courses check out . Based in Thomatal, the Schiefer group offer all sorts of driving experiences, carts, buggies, test drives and much more.  Visit their Website for up-to-date prices, offers and booking.

Quadverleih Rottensteiner in Göriach offer year round quad bike hire.  Their website is in German but all contact and booking information is clearly displayed. Hourly and daily rentals are available and quads will carry up to 2 passengers.  Drivers must have a valid driving licence, passengers must be over 12 years of age.  All drivers/passengers must wear helmets (which are supplied free of charge!).  Bookings must be made in advance.  Prices range from €30 for 2 hours, €50 for 5 hours and €80 for a full day.

Winter Driving Skills and Training

For driving enthusiasts St Michael  has it's own driving skills centre and dedicated driving track, offering unforgettable days out where you can learn or brush up on some winter driving skills.

Steiermärkische Landesbahnen and The Murtalbahn

The Steiermark Railway provides many possibilities for travelers and train enthusiasts.  All trains will happily transport you and your bicycle to various destinations throughout the Steiermark region of Austria.

For a little more nostalgia and history, enjoy a ride on the Murtalbahn, a fabulous steam train offering round trips from Tamsweg to Murau during the summer from June to September.

The Taurachbahn

The Taurachbahn, formerly part of the Murtalbahn, is Austria's highest narrow gauge railway.

The historic steam train runs between June and September, offering wonderful family friendly round-trip journeys through the beautiful landscape of the Lungau valley.  Trains run twice a day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, taking a round trip from Mauterndorf to the very quaint town of St Andrä.

The Tschu Tschu Bahn

The Tschu Tschu Bahn is a very special road faring steam train taking passengers from Rennweg to Pöllatal through the peaceful Carinthean landscape. Ideal for group excursions and family outings, this unusual train takes you into the heart of a peaceful valley where you can take a leisurely hike along the mountain paths and stop for refreshments at one of several Alm Huts.

Wild Life Park

Just a short distance away visitors have the opportunity to visit the animals at Wildpark Schlögelberger.  This special enclosure can be found at over 1300m above sea level over looking the beautiful town of St Margarethen.

The park is open all year round and in is en-route of the Wasserweg Leisnitz walk - a wonderful family outing taking you along the once raging Leisnitz River.  The dangerous stretch of water has been "tamed" over 2 centuries worth of building control structures, resulting in a very interesting and beautiful sequence of waterfalls.
